A common phenomenon in student houses: dirty pans on the stove, dishes from a few days ago that are still in the sink. A refrigerator with expired products that are never checked. Student houses are never super hygienic. This puts you at risk of food infections. How do you prevent it?
A food infection is quite dangerous. It can make you very sick. This includes ailments that we normally do not talk about: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and in serious cases kidney failure or meningitis. And is that really worth it for a few plates that you were too lazy to wash?
Ensure a clean workplace. Replace the dishcloths every day, which is of course easy because you have a nice Splash washing machine! These dishcloths harbor annoying housemates such as salmonella and other nasty bacteria. Wash these at at least 60 degrees so that you kill all pathogens. Also make sure you clean the kitchen utensils such as knives and cutting board properly. Maybe also for use, if you don't trust the cleaning skills of that one roommate...
Leftovers must be frozen thoroughly so that they can be kept for another 3 months. Do you keep them in the refrigerator? Then you have to make sure that the refrigerator is at 4 degrees and that the leftovers are eaten within two days. Placing a sticker on a container with the date is an easy and good way to prevent spoiled food.
Check twice every week whether there is any expired food in the refrigerator. Have you opened packages and jars? Then immediately write the date on it with a permanent maker. Then you know how long it has been open and that you have to throw it away after a week.
